Welcome to our Experimental Smart Farm

Established in 2022, the Experimental Smart Farm (ESF) at UC Merced is a 40-acre research facility dedicated to advancing agricultural innovation, sustainability, and education. As an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES), we lead research in automation, climate resilience, and workforce development. Here, we are working hard to create a better future for generations to come.

Research, Education, and Extension

Serving as a model for scalable and replicable farming solutions, the ESF aims to foster interdisciplinary research, provide educational opportunities, and extend the benefits of innovation to Central Valley communities through innovation collaborations.

Farming for the Future

At the Farm, we unite technology, sustainability, and community to create a better food system. Our research blends cutting-edge automation and environmental monitoring.

Join us in advancing sustainable farming practices that nurture the land and celebrate our shared food heritage. Together, we can cultivate a vibrant agricultural future for generations to come, fostering a healthier, more connected world through the power of food and farming.

On-Farm Research

The ESF integrates advanced technologies like IoT, robotics, drones, and AI with sustainable agricultural practices. It addresses the intertwined challenges of food, energy, and water systems (FEWS) in the context of climate change and environmental justice.

Research at ESF is multi-disciplinary, focusing on climate resilience, environmental sustainability, tech solutions for small farms, and the future of work in agriculture. Through continuous monitoring and data-driven approaches, ESF advances research in technology and automation, water management, soil quality, and nutrient management.
