Greenhouse

The Greenhouse’s mission is to deliver plant research facilities and services of the highest caliber to UC Merced faculty, students, and staff. The facilities consist of a research-quality greenhouse (built in 2020) with two 1,968-sq ft glasshouses and four growth chambers; the adjacent outdoor research area (26,744 sq ft) currently includes a poplar common garden experiment and two simpler greenhouses (built in 2017) of 648 sq ft each.

Services

We offer a wide range of services to meet diverse educational objectives and needs:

  • Project consultation with the greenhouse manager to assist with project design, plant care, and propagation.
  • Automatic watering, fertilizer application, and pest management** with the exception of specialized needs that will need to be handled by individual lab personnel will be available shortly when provided with a CoA.
  • Storage for materials (pots, media, tools, chemicals).
  • Cleaning materials (brooms, trash cans, bench brush, dust pans).
  • Locker spaces are available but limited depending per requests.
  • Soil sterilizer, vacuum hood, and other management tools found in facility.

General Safety

  • Only authorized personnel may enter the greenhouse. Authorized personnel must have gone through appropriate training as determined by the greenhouse manager.
  • The greenhouse is to be kept locked during non-work hours.
  • Users may not bring their own pesticides to the greenhouse without prior authorization.
  • Annual pesticide safety training will be available through the greenhouse manager. Users not requiring pesticide use on their materials must still go through this training.
  • Do not bring food into the greenhouse and do not eat in the greenhouse.
  • Avoid bringing personal belongings into the greenhouse, locker space are available per request.
